Trump Account Claim Checklist
Everything to have ready before you file IRS Form 4547 ("Trump Account Election") โ the deposit is not automatic. Eligible: U.S.-citizen children with a Social Security number, born Jan 1, 2025 โ Dec 31, 2028, claimed by an adult for whom the child is a qualifying dependent.
1 ยท Confirm eligibility (2 minutes)
- Birth date is inside the window.Born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028.
- The child is a U.S. citizen.
- The child has (or has applied for) a Social Security number. Most newborns get one automatically via the hospital's Enumeration-at-Birth paperwork. If not, apply free at ssa.gov โ never pay a third party for an SSN.
2 ยท Confirm who opens the account
- Check the priority order. If more than one adult could open it: legal guardian โ parent โ adult sibling โ grandparent.
- Agree as a family on one filer.Only one account per child โ duplicate claims delay processing.
3 ยท Gather documents
- Child's Social Security card (or SSA confirmation).
- Child's birth certificate.
- Your own government-issued ID.
- Your own SSN / taxpayer info. The filing adult identifies themselves on the claim.
4 ยท File the election
- Fastest โ online: irs.gov/trumpaccounts File Form 4547 in your IRS Individual Online Account (sign in or create one via ID.me). The IRS says it takes 5โ10 minutes.
- Other routes: with your federal tax return, or by mail Form & instructions at irs.gov (search "Form 4547"). Program info hub: trumpaccounts.gov.
- No rush, but don't wait: there's no annual deadline (outer limit: Dec 31 of the year the child turns 17) โ but nothing is deposited until you file, and earlier money compounds longer.
- Save your confirmation โ screenshot or print it and keep it with the birth certificate.
5 ยท After the $1,000 lands (optional but smart)
- Decide on extra contributions.Up to $5,000/year total (the $1,000 seed doesn't count toward this); an employer may contribute up to $2,500 of the $5,000. Money is invested in U.S. stock-index funds; withdrawals generally start the year the child turns 18.
- Ask your employer whether they offer a Trump Account contribution benefit.
- Set a calendar reminder each birthday to review the account.
- Tell other new parents.Print the one-page flyer at trumphealthcare.us/flyer.html.
Watch for scams: the government will never charge a fee to open a Trump Account, and no one legitimate will call, text, or email asking for your child's SSN to "release" the $1,000. Only use irs.gov and trumpaccounts.gov.
